Pottermore Insider: You ask, we answer

Potter fan sites from around the globe helped us with the Pottermore name reveal, and now those same fan sites have been kind enough to tell us what their readers most want to know about the Pottermore experience.

While we can’t give everything away (even though we know you’d like us to!), we’d really love to answer some of your questions …

Will Pottermore be available in multiple languages?
Yes. Initially, Pottermore will be available in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish. We are aiming to introduce more languages in the future – including Japanese and Korean later this year. You’ll be able to keep track of language availability here on the Insider.

Will Pottermore be free?
Yes, access to Pottermore will be completely free; you won’t have to pay anything to use the site. The Pottermore Shop will have items in it that you’ll be able to buy, but choosing to purchase something – or not – won’t affect your progress through the story as the Shop sits outside of the online reading experience.

Can you please explain what you mean by ‘online reading experience’? How much will I, as a Pottermore user, be able to affect the story? After all, hasn’t Harry’s story already been told?
The best way to think of Pottermore is as an interactive, illustrated companion to the books. J.K. Rowling wanted to create a site where her stories could live on and where readers could explore them in a new way. In addition to discovering new material from J.K. Rowling about Harry’s world, you’ll be able to interact with key story Moments (the Sorting Hat sequence, for example) and upload your own comments, thoughts and artwork for all the characters, objects and places that you come across.

So Pottermore isn’t a massively multiplayer online role-playing game like World of Warcraft, or a social network game like Farmville?
No. While there will be some simple games you can play (you’ll be able to brew potions, for example), Pottermore is very much about the books: being able to experience Harry’s story in a new way and discover all the additional information that J.K. Rowling has written.

Isn’t there a House Cup that we compete for by earning points?
Yes, there is. As you progress through the story you’ll also be able to earn house points – and once you get to the end of the first book you can carry on earning points to help your house win the House Cup.

Would you say Pottermore is a social network for fans of Harry Potter?
Not really. Pottermore isn’t trying to compete with sites like Facebook or the Harry Potter forums and fan sites that are already out there. Once you’ve signed up to Pottermore you’ll be able to find and invite your Facebook friends (if you’re over thirteen) and leave comments in your house common room and the Great Hall, but Pottermore isn’t a social networking site where you can share personal information or chat in forums.

I saw the Sony logo at the top of Pottermore.com. What’s Sony’s involvement with the site?
Sony is the primary partner of Pottermore. They have been consulted and involved in the development of the site experience and will offer a range of products and services to Pottermore users.

Is Pottermore the Harry Potter encyclopedia?
J.K. Rowling has written exclusive new material especially for Pottermore giving unique insights, back stories and additional information about the characters, places and objects in the Harry Potter series. For now, Pottermore is the only place you’ll be able to find new information from J.K. Rowling about Harry’s world, and we’ll be releasing this material as each of the seven books appears on the site.

Once I’ve been sorted, will I be able to change houses?
J.K. Rowling has created a series of questions for the Sorting Hat, and how you answer these questions will determine which of the four houses you’ll be in. Once you’ve been sorted, you won’t be able to change; the Sorting Hat’s decision is final!

What formats will the ebooks be available in? Will I be able to read them on my iPad/Sony eReader/Kindle…?
The Pottermore Shop is due to open in October. Our aim is to offer the ebooks in an as many formats as possible. We’ll provide more information closer to the time.

I’ve submitted my email to the Pottermore website – does this mean I’m registered with Pottermore.com?
Not yet. If you’ve submitted your email address to the site, we’ll use it to let you know when site registration is open to everyone. In other words, once you’ve received an email from us, you’ll be able to visit Pottermore.com and complete the registration process.

Remember, to get into Hogwarts you must have magical ability…

What’s going to happen on 31 July?
We don’t want to ruin the surprise but something will be happening on Pottermore.com on 31 July. Come back to the site, or keep an eye on the Pottermore Insider (http://insider.pottermore.com) and our Pottermore Twitter feed for details.

Is the Pottermore Owl Twitter account official?
No, it’s not – but we kind of wish we’d thought of it!

How Many E-Books?

How Many E-Books?
There are also a couple of one-time events pushing on the trend: Borders closed, cutting into physical sales, and Harry Potter e-books are due to be released later this year, which everyone expects will cause a huge spike upward in those numbers.

My Day at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter

Article by Kirby Collins

When we walked through the gates our first comment was how authentic everything looked. We also took a picture by the famous red Steam Engine, Hogwarts Express which is right there too. Next we went to the Owlery, Dervish and Banges and the Owl Post which are together right there. While in Dervish and Bangs we looked over the robes, house t-shirts and brooms for sale. I bought a Gryffindor t-shirt and we both laughed at the Monsters Book of Monsters that they had in a cage there. Next we went to Ollivanders which I’ve yet to visit because there’s always an hour wait to get in but hey you get to have a wand choose you so I can understand the attraction. We then rode the Flight of the Hippogriff which is a roller coaster set up around Hagrid’s hut where he introduces you to Buckbeak and teaches you how to approach a hippogriff respectfully; it’s a great ride for the whole family.

I am a huge Harry Potter fan, I was there the day the Wizarding World of Harry Potter opened at Universal Studios Islands of Adventure and I have made many other friends who are just as big of fans as I am. I’ve met a lot of these people while writing what we call ‘fan fiction’; these are stories we’ve written about characters from the book. One such friend, Peter, came down this fall to visit. He came to see the shuttle launch but, of course being this close to Orlando, we had to go to the Wizarding World.

Then we stopped to watch the Frog Choir and the kids of the Triwizard Spirit rally. The choir sang songs from the movies and the girls of Beauxbatons and the men of Durmstrang showed off their respective talents, you can get a picture with them after they are done if you’d like.

Next we went to the big ride, the main event: Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey. Once you get into the castle you pass by the house points counters, the sorting hat and the Hall of Portraits. You go through Dumbledore’s office and the History of Magic classroom. Dumbledore welcomes you to the castle and tells you to beware of a loose dragon. Then you meet up with Harry, Ron and Hermione who invite you to ‘skive’ off class with them and here’s where the journey begins.

After all this excitement we were hungry so we went to the Three Broomsticks to grab a bite. We, of course, got some butterbeer now I had tried it before and I had described it to my friend so I was interested to hear what he thought, he liked it, as I knew he would. The d

Alliteration, Anagrams and Initials

Alliteration is the repetition of consonant sounds, usually at the beginning of words. This is one of Rowling’s most common techniques as when in Book Five, 14 out of 38 chapter titles are alliterated. They range from such ordinary-sounding tidies as “The Ministry of Magic” and “Detention with Dolores,” to the more exotic sounding “The Centaur and the Sneak” and “St. Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries.” Earlier when Harry needs desperately to see Professor Dumbledore but has forgotten the password, he begins guessing with Fizzing Whizbee, Drooble’s Best Blowing Gum, and finally Cockroach Cluster, which to his surprise actually works. Characters with alliterated names include Luna Lovegood, Dedalus Diggle, Gellert Grindelwald, and Filius Flitwick; while businesses include the Twilfit and Tattings tailor shop and the Borgin and Burkes antique store. Professor Lockhart requires students to buy his autobiography, Magical Me, and other texts include The Adventures of Martin Miggs: The Mad Muggle, Break with a Banshee, Gadding with Ghouls, Holidays with Hags, Travels with Trolls, and Wanderings with Werewolves. All four of the Hogwarts houses Omega Seamaster Replica were founded by wizards with alliterative names: Godric Gryffindor, Helga Hufflepuff, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Salazar Slytherin.

A student poster illustrates words derived from the Latin root mare. Sibilance is an especially powerful kind of alliteration because of the strength of such “hissing” sounds as s, z, sh, ch, and / Rowling humorously uses sibilance in the name of the Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes and in the name of St. Brutus’s Secure Center for Incurably Criminal Boys, which is where the Dursleys tell their neighbors Harry goes during the school year. A more somber use of sibilance is the name of Severus Snape, whose given name reminds readers that he is a “severe” faculty member, while the hissing sounds and fact that his surname is just one letter off from snake probably help readers remember that he is headmaster of Slytherin House. He is also the inventor of a forbidden curse, Sectumsempra! which wounds victims with cuts that never heal.

Anagrams and initials play an unusually important role in the plot. Early in the series, readers get acquainted with a student who was a schoolmate of Harry’s father and his friends. The student’s name was Tom Riddle, and indeed he presents a riddle for readers to figure out. Later, readers learn that his full name is Tom Marvolo Riddle, and still later that these letters can be rearranged to spell out I Am Lord Voldemort. In another puzzler, Harry, Ron, and Hermione learn that the initials R. A. B. have something to do with one of Lord Voldemort’s Horcruxes, and in a mystery that extends over a couple of books they finally discover that the initials stand for Regulus Arcturus Black, the brother of Sirius Black. In lighter parts of the series, Rowling names a set of standardized tests that students take N.E.W.T.s for “Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests,” an appropriate expression of how they feel about the Omega Speedmaster Replica Watches tests. She makes an extra little joke when she names another set of tests O.W.L.s, which stands for “Ordinary Wizarding Levels.” Near the end of the series, after Harry, Ron, and Hermione have left school for the summer and are at the Weasleys1 Burrow, they anxiously wait for their owls to bring them their 0. W.L.s.
