for some of you who Harry Potter fans… and for some like me (Hermoine Granger fans ) who felt the last movie didn’t quite satisfy our thirst to the fullest… have no fear, there is always Pottermore to further enhance your flavors~ (source) personally directed by Rowling herself, Pottermore promises a brand new online reading experience which involves the readers’ help to build it~ it will also provide opportunities to purchase audio and ebooks too~ lastly, Rowling has decided to release additional information about the books that she had been storing up for the past 13 years~

i’m not sure ’bout you guys but personally, i have never seen an author release something of this scale for free~ i mean, usually they will be keen on sucking more money out from you~ but for one of those rare times, such valuable goodies are free~ hehe~ but for me the most major factor is that the original author is involved~ how many times have you gotten some other dude who tries to free-ride on the establishment and ruins the whole stuff by changing wherever that suits their convenience… or sometimes…. their pockets? i’ve always been a huge sucker for originality – meaning everything that’s not from the creator is almost unjust while anything from the original i’ll slurp it all up~ haha~ so it’s definitely something to look forward to~

currently there’s a beta testing phase from 31st Jul to 6th Aug ’11 (sorry for announcing this late) where you need to solve riddles in order to know the actual link to access the website~ more details can be found here (source) but before you rush off, here’s some insider information which they don’t put in the FAQ:

  • magic quill registration starts from 9am – 1pm (BST) – which is approx 4pm – 8pm (SGT)

but should you miss the last remaining 3 days of registration, you can still place your name in an account but it will only be accessible in Oct~ so if 2 months of wait is simply unbearable because the whole Harry Potter mood would have been gone, it’s best you head over to Pottermore at least 30 mins before registration and do your homework on how to win that access account~

next up, is the app called Harry Potter Film Wizardry (source) where you can relish backdoor information of all 8 movies~ the app includes:

  • slideshows of previously unpublished photography
  • animations (e.g. the Marauder’s Map, the Time-Turner)
  • a timeline showing Daniel Radcliffe growing up as Harry Potter (WHY IS THERE NO EMMA WATSON’S TIMELINE?! okay to be honest i dunno cause i haven’t downloaded~ if anyone can lemme know would be awesome )
  • 3-D objects (e.g. the Yule Ball invitation, Weasleys’ Wizard Wheezes product selection, the Borgin and Burkes auction catalog)
  • concept art, interactive audio, behind-the-scenes videos
  • 1 gig worth of media

unfortunately:

  • the app is only for iPad users
  • it costs US$12.99 (the main reason why i haven’t purchased it yet… haha~)

personally i feel that it’s quite worth it considering it’s 1 gig worth of goodies~ but i feel that the price of US$12.99 is simply too steep to damage my pockets especially since i’m still a student~ where’s my student discount?!

Harry Potter Film Wizardry Review – Reviews, iPad Apps and Games

Developer: Insight Editions
Price: $12.99

iPad Integration Rating: ★★★★☆
User Interface Rating: ★★★★☆
Re-use Value Rating: ★★★½☆

Overall Rating: ★★★★☆

With the conclusion of the Harry Potter film series, there will probably be a huge onset of all kinds of extra features, special box set releases, and more. But the Harry Potter Film Wizardry app for the iPad is probably the coolest of these extras.

I think of the app as a sort of non-disc DVD extra. The app includes stories about what’s gone on behind-the-scenes during the long process of making the eight films, unpublished pictures, and plenty of interviews with actors. The app is split up into sections; each section is one of the movies and an extras section at the end. The size of the app conveys just how much information and media is packed into this app – almost a gigabyte (992 MB)!

Something I complained about in a previous book app that I reviewed was that the videos were from an outside source and, therefore, could’t be viewed unless the iPad was connected to the internet. For us iPad Wi-Fi owners, offline access can often be a make-or-break feature in deciding to buy the app. The media, in this case, is a part of the app, which can be a huge deal when considering to spend $12.99 on an app (which better be perfect for that kind of price).

The extras include obvious items, such as the trailers for each movie, but also cute, fun pages like the Hogwarts Acceptance Letter and the Borgin and Burkes Catalog. Along with the trailers for each movie, each movie has a slideshow of photos (some or all of which are previously unreleased). Overall, for a true Harry Potter fan, this is a must-have! With behind-the-scenes information in the articles, awesome photos, and extras, just think of buying the app as a part of the “deluxe version” of a Harry Potter box set.

Google Teams Up With J.K. Rowling's Pottermore

Pottermore, the free online experience set to keep the popularity of the Harry Potter franchise alive after the release of the books and movies, has joined forces with Google. Pottermore will be integrated with a number of Google products and APIs. Those who purchase a Harry Potter ebook or digital audiobook (available exclusively from Pottermore) will be able to store it in their Google Books library, meaning it can then be read on over 80 e-readers using Google’s app.

Google Checkout will be the preferred third-party payment platform for all of the purchases made on Pottermore. Also, YouTube will be used for future global video broadcasts, as it was for J.K. Rowling’s initial Pottermore announcement last month.
