What a Book Launch has to do With Winning a House

(PRWEB) October 14, 2011

Startup publisher Nimblewords Books is giving away the chance to win a house. The giveaway is to celebrate the launch of Nimblewords? first publication, a light fantasy novel called The Mage?s Servant.

?Entry is completely free,? says founder Brian Dillon-Phillips. ?You don?t have to buy the book or anything.?

What?s the catch? Well, you have to answer a simple math question ? and get it right. There?s a limit of 100,000 entrants. Also, for the house to be given away, the book has to sell very well.

Brian says that it should do so. ?The book is great! The feedback we?ve had from our pre-release readers has been uniformly very positive. It?s written for younger readers and all those who still believe in magic. Like the first of the Harry Potter series. A perfect gift for Christmas.?

He continues, ?The challenge we?re facing is that we?re new. Nobody knows that we exist, and that makes it hard to sell books. We?re hoping that the publicity around the giveaway will change all that.?

Even if the sales target isn?t met, there will still be a prize. It just won?t be as grand as a house.

The giveaway is open to entrants from much of the English-speaking world. Further details and conditions can be found on both the publisher?s main website and the book-specific site.

Harry Potter Series Has Generated More Than $1.6B in Disc Sales

Harry Potter is cinematic gold bullion.

The final film in the mega-grossing series, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” shattered box office records last weekend after debuting to north of $478 million worldwide.

But that’s just a taste of the spoils to come if the bespectacled wizard’s performance on DVD and Blu-ray is any indication.

Thus far, the first seven films in Warner Bros. boy-wizard franchise have banked some $1.63 billion in domestic disc sales, according to new estimates from the media research firm IHS Screen Digest.

That heady number doesn’t even count the additional $150 million that “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1″ is still expected to generate on home video in North America. Also, importantly, it doesn’t take into account the hundreds of millions of dollars more the series has grossed in foreign home entertainment rentals and sales.

All told, the first six films in the series shipped an estimated 89 million video units in their initial releases to the U.S. video market during the past eight years, IHS reports.

Theatrically, Potter has lapped James Bond as the most lucrative franchise in movie history, having already grossed more than $6.8 billion worldwide through Tuesday.

Here’s a look at the numbers IHS came up with:

Whiskey Fire: World's Stupidest Muggle

My personal favorite scene from the Harry Potter saga appears midway through Half-Blood Prince, where Harry is up in Dumbledore’s office, and Harry says, “Professor? Is there anything in the whole fucking universe more piss-drunk stupid than a Townhall column?” And Dumbledore says, “Christ on a horcrux, can you believe the shit they’ll publish?”

Albus Dumbledore advised Harry Potter that “Dark and difficult times lie ahead. Soon we must all face the choice between what is right and what is easy.” As the final installment of the Harry Potter series comes to a close, it becomes clear that Harry was equal to that challenge, and that, despite great personal cost and effort, Harry consistently chose “right” over “easy”. Not so President Obama.

Since first being sworn into office almost three years ago, Americans have had the misfortune to witness Obama’s propensity for taking the easy way out of a crisis, regardless of the cost to the American people.

The rest of this article focuses on how, just like Voldemort, Obama uses a teleprompter. And insights of a similar class.

(The punchline would be that the stimulus was too low because Obama is a right-leaning moderate. Ha ha ha.)

Harry Potter Casts Positive Spell, According to Study

West Hartford, CT (PRWEB) July 8, 2005

J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter fantasy series casts a positive spell on children, suggests a study completed by three Saint Joseph College professors.

The four-year study “Harry Potter: Are Children and Adults Reading the Same Books?” was completed by Mary Whitney, Ph.D., Elizabeth Vozzola, Ph.D. and Joan Hofmann, Ph.D., of Saint Joseph College.

The researchers hope to share their findings about the positive messages found in Rowling’s novels with educators, librarians and parents worldwide. The work also represents a resource for parents and teachers to use when discussing moral stories with children.

Last November, Professors Whitney and Vozzola presented their research at the Association for Moral Education’s International Conference in Dana Point, CA. The study contests claims made by groups across the United States that the Harry Potter novels confuse children about magic and lead them to the occult.

“Many teachers and librarians across the nation are under siege for supporting the Harry Potter series,” said Dr. Vozzola. “Our research program found absolutely no evidence that reading Harry Potter leads children to the occult – the moral messages these books send are overwhelmingly positive.”

“We recently edited our conference paper for publication in the hopes that we can share our findings with organizations of librarians and teachers across the United States,” continues Dr. Vozzola. “Our study will hopefully initiate a nationwide dialogue between concerned parents and their children about how the Harry Potter novels teach lessons of courage and friendship – not black magic.”

This month (June 2005), the study was accepted for publication in the Journal of Research in Character Education.

Saint Joseph College (http://www.sjc.edu) in West Hartford is Connecticut’s only four-year women’s college. Consistently cited on the national level for the quality of its academic programs, the College offers The Women’s College, and for men and women, The Prime Time Program for the way women and men live and learn and The Graduate School. The Gengras Center serves children with special needs from more than 40 towns. The renowned School for Young Children is one of the oldest early childhood centers in the state and Connecticut’s model laboratory school.

GMIPoll: Only One Third of Harry Potter Fans Say the Boy Wizard Will Live to a Ripe Old Age

Seattle, WA (PRWEB) July 17, 2007

The death of Harry Potter J. K. Rowlings has already admitted that two main characters will perish in the final installment of the Harry Potter series. Most speculation is centered squarely on Harry: Will he make it through the series unscathed, or will he meet his doom? That’s exactly what we asked Harry Potter readers. Only nine percent say Voldemort will kill the young hero. A little more than half (52 percent) say Potter sacrifices himself so Voldemort can be killed. Two percent say he falls off his broom and dies (maybe by a stray bludger?) A little over a third (34 percent) say Potter will survive the series and die of old age.

A few (1 percent) predict that Potter is immortal and never dies. The GMIPoll, powered by global market intelligence solutions provider GMI (Global Market Insite, Inc.), surveyed 509 Harry Potter readers online in the U.S. using GMI’s permission based GlobalTestMarket consumer panel. The survey was conducted from July 14th to 15th, 2007. All participants were paid for their opinions.

Is Albus Dumbledore really dead?

The mighty wizard Albus Dumbledore was killed at the end of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, book six in the series. The controversial ending had many scratching their heads. Did Potter’s mentor, one of the most powerful wizards in the series, just die? Even after Dumbledore’s funeral, only 25 percent of readers were convinced. The rest, a full 75 percent say Dumbledore is still alive.

Is Severus Snape evil incarnate or simply misunderstood?

Snape kills Dumbledore at the end of book six, but does that mean he’s loyal to the Death Eaters? We already know that most readers believe Dumbledore is still alive, but what does that mean for Snape? Is he a spy for the good guys? Forty-eight percent say he’s good, but more than half (52 percent) say Snape is evil.

Harry Potter Vs. Lord Voldemort

This seemed like an easy question: will Harry Potter kill his arch nemesis Lord Voldemort? Most (77 percent) say Potter will kill Voldemort, while 23 percent say Potter will fail in his quest.

Harry Potter 8: The Post-Hogwarts Years?

Rowling has maintained that Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the last in the seven-book series, but she is keeping the door open slightly. While she did say that another Potter book is unlikely, she also said “never say never” after a huge petition circulated over the internet called “Save Harry”. Most Potter readers polled (54 percent) say they believe Rowling when she says it’s strictly a seven-book series. Forty-six percent say you’ll see more of Harry after book seven. The Potter series made Rowlings the world’s first billionaire author, and we’ll have to wait and see if she can permanently walk away from the wildly popular franchise.

Searching for spoilers

Few books have been held under such tight pre-release security as those in the Harry Potter series, but leaks are inevitable. Already spoilers abound for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, but how many want to know the ending before reading the book? Almost 75 percent say they would not read spoilers. The rest (26 percent) say if they haven’t already started scouring the internet, they soon will.

Buying Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

Even with all the hype surrounding Harry Potter, most people say they won’t get the book the day it comes out. Thirty-five percent say, “I’m in no hurry. I’ll pick up the book when I have time.” Twenty-five percent have pre-ordered the book and are having it mailed, which means it will likely get to them a day or two after the book goes on sale. Nine percent say they pre-ordered the book, but will wait in line and pick up the book opening day at 12:01 am sharp on July 21st, 2007. Fourteen percent say they will wait in line hoping to get a copy when the book goes on sale. Ten percent say they will borrow the book from a friend. Two percent say they will check it out at the library.

Those who are really excited about the book are not alone. Twenty-three percent of Harry Potter readers say they are so excited that they plan to start reading at 12:01 am the day the book goes on sale.
