Inside Google Books: Pottermore and Google team up to enable Harry

(Cross-posted on the Google Commerce blog)

When JK Rowling’s new website Pottermore opens its doors this Fall, we’ll provide services to help fans make the most of their ebook purchasing experience.

Pottermore and Google are teaming up to integrate Pottermore with a number of Google products and APIs. So when the series of Harry Potter ebooks launches on Pottermore.com in early October, these bestsellers will be available in the U.S. via the open Google eBooks platform. When you buy a Harry Potter ebook from Pottermore, you will be able to choose to keep it in your Google Books library in-the-cloud, as well as on other e-reading platforms.

Google eBooks can be read on most devices with a modern browser, through the Google Books apps for iOS and Android smartphones and tablets, and on more than 80 ereaders.

Pottermore will be the exclusive place to buy Harry Potter ebooks and digital audiobooks. You’ll be able to buy ebooks from the Pottermore Shop, push them to your Google Books library and store them alongside your other Google eBooks. Your other Google eBooks may be purchased from any of more than 250 independent booksellers or from Google directly.

Also under this agreement, Google Checkout will be the preferred third party payment platform for all purchases made on Pottermore.com. When you visit the Pottermore Shop, you’ll be able to pay for your purchases using Google Checkout, in addition to using a debit or credit card.

The Pottermore team also plans to use YouTube for global video broadcasts in the future, as they did for JK Rowling’s announcement of Pottermore in June.

Stay tuned for more Pottermore and Google wizardry on the web this summer, leading up to when Pottermore opens.

Halloween Costume Ideas For Groups of Three or Four

Decide if you want your Halloween costumes to be the same thing, such as a gang of pirates; complementary things, such as Disney princesses; or a famous three- or foursome, such as Mickey, Minnie, and Pluto.

To dress up the same, consider being members of a famous band or sports team, people of the same profession, or a gang of some type (ninjas, Pink Ladies, etc.).

Complementary group Halloween costumes could be different farm animals, cowboys and Indians, or various superheroes and their sidekicks, lady lovers, or villains. Browse through your books and movies to find more famous characters, such as from Star Wars, Peter Pan, or the Muppets.

Some famous trios include the Three Stooges, the Three Little Pigs, the Three Bears, the Three Blind Mice, the Three Wise Men, the Three Musketeers, the Marx brothers, the Flintstones, the Rubbles, Huey/Dewey/Louie, Harry Potter/Hermione Granger/Ron Weasley, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and the Cat in the Hat/Thing 1/Thing 2 (or the two children).

Some famous foursomes are the Fantastic Four, Incredibles, Ninja Turtles, Wizard of Oz crew, children from The Chronicles of Narnia, and animals from the movie Madagascar.

For more foursomes, include other people related to the trio ideas, such as adding Malfoy, Ginny, Luna, or Neville to the Harry Potter team; the wolf to the Three Little Pigs; Goldilocks to the Three Bears; Dave to Alvin and the Chipmunks; and the Flintstones to the Rubbles (no Pebbles and Bam Bam).

If you have a baby or two, include them in the group Halloween costume. Or ask older children if they would like to be part of a family Halloween costume. If you are going as two couples, then read my article on Halloween costumes for couples for more ideas.

Magical Quill, Day 5

It wouldn’t be The Last Muggle to Read Harry Potter if there wasn’t a fair share of Hufflepuff bashing. Don’t worry. Karma is a cruel mistress. The Sorting Hat will probably make me a Hufflepuff out of spite.

How Harry Potter fans feel after a week of trying to register for Pottermore (Photo courtesy of The Guardian)

Day 5′s Magical Quill clue went live at 1:00 p.m. EST.

When the Pottermore folks said the questions were going to get easier as the week wore on, they weren’t kidding. Today’s clue asked would-be registrants to multiply the address of Grimmauld Place by 21. The answer brought people to the Scholastic Website, where they were presented with an advertisement easily found at the very top of the page. A few quick clicks of the mouse to catch the Magical Quill and off they went to registration.

Was anyone able to load the Magical Quill game yesterday on Sony’s website? I’m curious if it was a different style task. Today’s mirrored the Quill quest we saw earlier in the process. Perhaps Pottermore’s tech team was trying to avoid the fiasco that ensued yesterday when no one could find the quill (henceforth to be known as Pottergate).

I haven’t seen the numbers yet, but it seemed a lot easier to get into registration today (I was helping a friend who is out-of-town and away from the computer this week). I believe the clue was only available for 20 minutes yesterday, whereas it lasted almost an hour today. Things are slowing down as diehard fans successfully register throughout the week.

But if you haven’t registered yet, don’t get too comfortable. The Pottermore team has made it very clear they want to give every time zone a chance. That means we’re facing some wacky clue times ahead.

The Magical Quill Clue Will Be Released:

Friday, August 5th: 1:30 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. BST (8:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. EST)

Saturday, August 6th: 12:30 a.m. – 3:00 a.m. BST (7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. EST Friday night)

That means the US will see two Magical Quill clues tomorrow. Friday, August 5th is the LAST DAY for Americans to register early for Pottermore.

The clues will be available in the following time frames:

Eastern Standard Time: 8:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. 7:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.

Central Standard Time: 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. 6:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

Mountain Standard Time: 6:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. 5:30 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Pacific Standard Time: 5:00 a.m. – 8:00 a.m. 4:30 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.

Alaska Standard Time: 4:00 a.m. – 7:00 a.m. 3:30 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Hawaii Standard Time: 3:00 a.m. – 6:00 a.m. 2:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.

The first clue will pertain to Half-Blood Prince and the final clue of the Magical Quill contest will involve Deathly Hallows.

Seeing the direction the questions are going, how much do you want to bet the Half-Blood Prince question is “How many Horcruxes did Voldemort intentionally create. Multiply that by 14″ and the final question is “How many Deathly Hallows are there? Multiply that by 7″. Simple, but effective. Hufflepuffs, there’s hope for you yet! (yeah, I did it again)

If you’re finding the early Pottermore registration more difficult than the N.E.W.T.s, here’s some insider tips and advice to help you get that Hogwarts letter.

If you’re among the thousands already declared “Magical”, share your wizard name here.
